The Construction Industry Workforce Development Awards were developed to give significant national and international recognition for extraordinary, exemplary and innovative training and education programs which either encourages individuals to pursue a career in the construction industry and/or enhance an individual's construction skills.

Southeast Manpower Tripartite Alliance (SEMTA) Meeting Held on 10-4-06
The Southeast Manpower Tripartite Alliance (SEMTA) has been organized to:

  • Determine the magnitude of craft labor demand and supply in the Southeast, including the impact of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
  • Identify ways to minimize potential labor shortages
  • Develop appropriate action plans
Industrial owners, contractors and labor have come together to form SEMTA as a collaborative effort to address regional manpower shortages. SEMTA met on October 4, 2006 in Charleston, SC. CURT recognizes that the most critical issue facing the industry is the presence of a skilled work force shortage. Accordingly the following objectives have been established to address the multiple issues that contribute to the development of a skilled work force.

  • Liaison with existing associations or organizational efforts who attract, train and retain value-centered young adult into the construction industry.
  • Promote skilled trades training and journeyman upgrades.
  • Keep the need for skilled trades at the forefront of owner organizations and develop action steps to communicate those needs more effectively.
  • Develop a repository of best practices for the recruitment, training and retention of skilled trades.
  • Promote management and supervisory training among our contractors.
  • Encourage contractor associations and their affiliated organizations to continue efforts to alleviate shortages in management.

  • Establish meaningful dialogue with organized and open shop sectors of the industry in order to improve the quality of labor relations and creatively develop solutions to the work force shortage.
  • Establish meaningful dialogue or alliances with trades associations in order to improve the quality of understanding and communication between owners and contractors.
